Illinois Temporary Visitor Driver’s License
In January 2013 the governor of Illinois signed into law a bill allowing non-visa status individuals to obtain Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL). The TVDL might be used only for driving purposes. It is not valid for identification purposes. It cannot be used as, for example, identification document to board an airplane. The applicant will have to provide proof of the following: name and date of birth, written signature, twelve-month residency in Illinois, current address and proof of insurance for the vehicle used for the road test. Additionally, the applicant will have to pass vision, written and road exams. The TVDL will be valid for three years. After an applicant will meet all of the requirements the Secretary of State (SOS) will verify information provided on the application, and run the photographs through the facial recognition system. When verification is complete the TVDL will be mailed to the applicant.
Please note, however, if an undocumented applicant previously applied for ID or driver’s license using someone else’s or false information, the applicant may face serious legal consequences. It is strongly advisable to seek attorney’s advice before applying for TVDL.
